yup, tea leaves or Tiger Woods- optimism even quasi tongue in cheek seems to emerge, and leave it to onthewaythere to say sooth

for me the signs were purely personal:

where am i
last year my brain was in chronic fatigue
held hostage by the insanity of oppression of short sighted greedy hate mongers who turned middle north america in to the fourth reich poisoning minds, soil and air and exporting murder all over the world.
and to see the representatives who long for their lost fascism sitting on their fat thin and warped asses during young Jefferson Lincoln Roosevelt Kennedy's speech tonight to usher in a new economy while the patriots in the land lauded and applauded gave me the sweetest, purest, righteous case of schadenfreude i never knew i could enjoy getting in my life.
otherwise i saw humanity emerge positive, brilliant and sexy
and vow to do my best to uplift myself and all that's around me
and as for the details of the government's sponsorship, for once in my life i trust the rookie wonks who have picked decent and bright advisors, labored and swallowed bile in compromises, and who promise to champion honesty.
how nice to see adults reasoning, arguing and fighting in an arena so little long ago awash in pigslop inane rhetoric, denial and deceit
and lastly, i feel humbled that i have yet to get my mind around our global economy's condition, but safe in believing that all the wrong paths we will certainly stray down will be righted by a tireless reasonable bright and positive alliance of humans acting humanely

While I have the audacity of hope that Obama will finally end the cruel and embarrassingly stupid embargo of Cuba, I'm not so sure that the first civil war will be the last. Looks to me that the red states are primed to succeed again over issues not unrelated to why they started it the first time. If they do, I just hope they wear those reenactment costumes.

Ahhh, the AJC. One thing that always stands out in my mind when I think about the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is that it has a (bleeping) freakin' fantastic ability to insert the Civil War into virtually any story, at least once every day -- if it isn't the subject of the a story all by itself. However can a society hang on so tightly to being losers? You'd think the losing side would want to forget that part of history, fold that flag and put it away, stash it in the back of the museum and let dust collect on it, let the moths eat it.

You know, I have ancestors who fought what they thought was a good fight, but they were losers. They needed to get over it.

We left behind not only Georgia, but Atlanta, too. Only to live in Florida (Miami!) where (bleeping) bad schools and (bleeping) shocking corruption and (bleeping) criminal enterprise are legend and rampant.

And where the (bleeping) Miami Herald never misses an opportunity to insert Fidel Castro into at least one story every single day (sigh). And probably will for at least the next 140 years.

Let's face it: hope is pretty audacious. Yesterday was spectacular. Count 2 more with tears streaming. Wished there had been more relief in W's flight, but he was still smiling and I'll always resented it - best to get on with life and hope he disappears, as forgiveness for him is not just not in the cards (makes me hope there really is a hell so he'll have a place he belongs).
The longer I stew over the lack of idealism in the stimulus, the more that I am resolved that we do not have the answers nor the possibility on enough of a consensus even if we did. Throw some money. Incrementally better is better than none.
The economy has its cycles. This is another. The "party" may be over, but I firmly believe that the greedy MF that invented the tens of trillions of faux wealth before, will again.
Also, this cynic understands "that ground has shifted beneath" us and "that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long, no longer apply."
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. And, yes, it is a tragedy to have potluck dinners instead of Bachanalias.

Lee, I am really enjoying your blog. But yesterday's resonated enough for me to take the time to finally register and make a comment. I wondered why I awoke this morning, after such a glorious day yesterday, feeling like the world had crashed around me. It was the "shack-faced" hangover you described so well. Despite "W's" helicopter ride out of our lives, and the innauguration of a leader who only comes once in any lifetime, this morning felt like "the party's over" ---for good. We are still in two wars, the economy (which I have spent most of my life blithely ignoring---because I could) is worsening daily, and the sense of dread for what could possibly happen to change both seemed overwhelming. Perhaps it is. No man can change in days what Bush hath wraught over the last eight years. I see dear friends strugging and afraid, and I am afraid too.
I am hoping that our new leader does exactly what he said he would yesterday.
He needs to challenge us all to move on to a new way of life---maybe not by choice. The party is over---and maybe it's gone on too long. Is it really such a tragedy to have potluck dinners instead of Bachanalias? Do we really need two cars---or even one? Certainly we don't need two homes. I say this because I think we are all going to have to change---starting with me.

We (my generation) have spent most of our lives trying to get or "manage wealth" (I just love this newest term used by the financial advertisors). Perhaps in the pursuit of something other than a new house, a new car or a new electronic gadget, we will just have to pursue survival. That was the way of the world for 99% of civilization before us. At least we will be in it together. And perhaps we will find in ourselves the stuff in ourselves that saved your grandmother (and mine) during the last great depression. Perhaps. We can only hope. And that's the most audacious dream of all.

Lee: Can't we find some way to use Blagojevich's pelt to stimulate the economy? As a bio-fuel? Send it out to work? Build low-cost housing from it? Stuff it into Sarah Palin's gob?
